Chapter Thirty

It was hot as Hell in the chamber we appeared in, no pun intended. It really was like a sauna and, yes, I’d noted the flames licking up the scorched rock walls behind us. Though they seemed more for ambience, than what I imagined the pits of Hell to be like. There was no lava or writhing, or screaming souls of the damned for all eternity, in fact the only eye catching unbelievably Demon like paraphernalia, was an enormous throne, adorned with a single bleached white skull at each end of the armrests. There were similar skulls piled high and scattered all around the thick base. Since they weren’t misshapen, I reluctantly assumed them to be human; all of which was centre stage upon a Dais.

At present the throne was empty, and yet I felt a strong sense that the Demon who normally sat upon it would overshadow its resplendence. Beads of sweat trickled between my shoulder blades, I squirmed at the uncomfortable sensation. A gentle cooling breeze blew across the nape of my neck, evoking a spine-tingling shiver despite the surrounding heat. I was startled by a chuckle against my ear, spinning on my heels with my heart thundering against my ribcage. It left me breathless and standing in the glorious light and radiance of golden skin and eyes of pale ocean blue. Lips as lush as ripened berries smiled down at me, beckoning me to taste them, and God help me, but I wanted to. He stroked a slender finger across my cheek, tracing along my jaw and tipped my head back. I closed my eyes against the overwhelming glow and beauty of a face that would make Angels weep. His breath whispered across my lips, speaking my name with such reverence, that tears slid from the corners of my closed eyes, before his mouth touched chastely against mine, coaxing my surrender, and like a devout disciple I gave it. A whimper escaped unbidden when his mouth left mine, leaving me bereft. I opened my eyes, seeing dancing flames had devoured the blue irises of moments before. I should have been scared yet the lingering desire left me wanting more. What was it with all these Demons and Guardians eliciting such wanton desires from me?

“Ah sweet Mercy, your blood calls to me like a fine wine across my tongue. I could sip your essence for an eternity, and I fear I would never have my fill.”

I blinked furiously, attempting to rid myself of the lust‐fuelled glasses I seemed to be wearing. “Um, that was very poetic for a Demon. I thought only flamboyant movie vampires, said things like that.”

He threw back his head, and a great burst of laughter filled the room. The sound made my skin feel electric, and I wanted to bask in its heat. I shuffled my feet desperate to ground myself, before I was entirely lost to him.

“You forget I was once an Angel. I have not forgotten all that is beautiful in the world.
